An Open-World In Primal Africa Awaits…

So, we’ve been able to review the combat mechanics through the first playtest that’s been going on for about two weeks. We’ve had a lot of great feedback. There are still some fixes to be made but we’re comfortable that it won’t affect experimenting with more parts of Voodoo‘s world. This is kind of why we dared to launch this Kickstarter campaign!

Now it’s more than a question of manners. We’re not sure we can say “thank you” enough times to the people who are joining us on this crazy journey of ours. We’ve still got a ways to go but today was primal! Some amazing backers got us to over €1,500 within an hour!

Okay, well we’re going to get back to campaigning so we make sure this project comes out as supercool as it’s supposed to. In the next few days, expect quite a few updates and a breakdown on some of the Kickstarter reward tiers. Pretty cool, in our humble opinion! Check them out here >>

Voodoo Closed-Beta Highlights, Gameplay, and More!

Wow! So we have some amazing Voodoo closed-beta highlights to share! Earlier this week, way before we had ever planned, we opened up our closed-beta 1.0 to a select group of playtesters. From feedback, to screenshots, to gameplay videos, here are just a few of our favorite closed-beta highlights from this week.

Voodoo Closed-Beta Highlights

(1) Gameplay Videos: So far most of you have only seen trailers, screenshots, and concept art from Voodoo. That’s why one of our favorite closed-beta highlights is the fact that lots of playtesters went on to make gameplay videos. Vezsstur created a video that (a) shows combat mechanics, (b) goes into some depth about what Voodoo has in store, and (c) is absolutely hilarious to watch! RODE 85’s video is quite analytical and Cryptic Hybrid created an exploratory video. Also, don’t miss KrazzykillaB’s video where he demonstrates his skill with our combat mechanics.

(2) Combat Feedback: We’re extremely delighted that our closed-beta 1.0, designed to test our combat system, was very well received. Our playtesters provided us with lots of positive feedback in Voodoo‘s community hub on Steam. Now that we’re comfortable with fighting mechanics and we know the improvements we have to make, we’re eager to move on to our closed-beta 2.0 in which gamers will finally be able to competitively battle the Izimu! Expect more closed-beta highlights on this soon too!

(3) Server Issues: Not all of our closed-beta highlights are positive though. We had server issues. As an indie studio developing an open-world multiplayer survival, we always knew this would be the case. We’ve implemented some short fixes but we’re looking into more solid ideas to address this once and for all. We’re actually thinking of launching a small Kickstarter campaign to get the funds we need for robust servers and to finish off some other cool extra features. Please let us know in the comments what you think about this or contact us with any other ideas you have.

We’re excited to announce that the Voodoo Steam page is now live! No, it’s nothing life-changing but at least you can go ahead and add us to your wishlist! It does make us realize how close we are to 2017 and how soon Voodoo will be available for everyone!

Yes. That (above) is what our Voodoo Steam page shows but that’s not what we’re talking about. You guessed it! In 6 days (November 14th) our closed-beta 1.0 begins! This is actually 3 days later than we originally intended but for technical reasons we need that delay. So far we’ve had over 8,500 stay-tuned subscriptions for Voodoo so we’re hoping that by the final phases of our closed-beta we’ll be seeing a lot of competition. We need to get ready to handle that!

We’re also eager to find out who we’re going to be crowning the “Izimu Awakener”. Yes, we’re still maintaining some mystery behind that title. A lot more information will be made public next week.

In case your curiosity isn’t satisfied, Jessica Erin Brown managed to squeeze some secrets out of us and then she published them on The Buttonsmashers! We’d like to warn you to be careful if you come across her while playing Voodoo. She may or may not be a friendly 😉

A Very Brief History Of Masks

We’re not really sure why cultures all around the world embrace masks. We do have an inkling of some things that mask-wearing is linked to in Africa that we attempt to embed in our game, Voodoo. This is some pretty cool stuff you may not guess from watching our trailer.

Communication With Ancestral Spirits: In West Africa especially, masks are used in ritual masquerades enacted to communicate with ancestral spirits. In Voodoo, you will be able to invoke a variety of spirits to unlock special knowledge or abilities. You’ll have to find the right mask for the right spirit though!

Grab Your Mask

Communication With Animals: Some African tribes believe that animal masks can be used to befriend and talk to wild beasts. Additionally they can also help to gain favor from the spirits of the forest or open savannas. Although we’re still far behind with development of our wildlife, we hope to implement a scheme in Voodoo whereby the right mask can help you with hunting (or taming?) the right beast.

Aura: Throughout many African tribes, a mask — much like a crown — is simply used to project a particular aura. Power. Wisdom. Benevolence. In Voodoo, we want you to have a lot of creative power over what a mask means for the identity of your tribe. This will be a fun part of our crafting system in the full release.

Inviting Gamers To Voodoo Closed-Beta: The Izimu Awakening

It’s Voodoo Closed-Beta Time!

When we said that we’d be making a big announcement at Milan Games Week 2016, we weren’t actually sure we were going to make it. Voodoo is scheduled to be released in early 2017 because there is still so much that we need to do! But the time for the Voodoo Closed-Beta is here and we’re working more frantically than ever to deliver an amazing game. The Voodoo Closed-Beta is happening only because of the huge amount of support we’ve received from our fans so far:

We love celebrating the simple things too. Like the fact that our announcement trailer has had 8,400+ views with about 40 new subscribers during Milan Games Week 2016 only! The 30+ feedback points that we’ve received from our demo players for improvements. Or the beauty of having people from different backgrounds go tribal with us!

If we were super-excited before, we’re triple-super-duper-excited now! Our early Voodoo Closed-Beta is just the first of many ways that we’re saying “Thanks for following us on this journey so far!” Without much further ado, below we brief you on what’s colossally cool about our closed-beta and how to participate.

Voodoo Closed-Beta Details

Time: The Voodoo Closed-Beta will begin on November 11th.

The Challenge: The Voodoo Closed-Beta is going to feature a deathmatch challenge. 16 Voodoo warriors will be selected to battle each other in one of the sections of our map and the winner will earn the eternal title of “Izimu Awakener”. Why? That will be revealed closer to the challenge.

Limitations: Only 16 warriors will be selected for the challenge. Only 200 gamers will have direct access to the closed-beta. However, 300 extra Steam keys will be raffled to the remaining entries so make sure you submit your application to the closed beta >>

Opening Call for Submissions for “Voodoo”


First of all, it’s been a wild ride so far! We started the year forging a new collaboration with IndieGala and later, at Gamescom, we were able to show our new trailer featuring an Izimu battle! Last month we won the Modena Nerd Indie Award and this month our tribe is going to Milan Games Week 2016 where we’ll be making our most exciting announcement yet!

 

We would never have done it without our fans and supporters and all the feedback you’ve given us. We’re overwhelmingly grateful and an Izimu-sized “Thank You!” to all of you!

 

Call For Submissions

 

We’ve got a short time left until the world of Voodoo opens up on Steam. This weekend we realized that we owe our survival thus far to collaboration. Now, we’d like to invite you to collaborate with us and make Voodoo an even more immersive experience than what we initially dreamed of. We know that survival is tribal, and together we can make this happen!

 

Below is a brief of submissions that we’re looking forward to receiving. You can just scroll to the bullet point that tickles your fancy!

 

Art: You’ve probably seen snapshots and videos of Voodoo. But what would you draw into this world? We’re looking for submissions that will show evidence of life. Ancient cave paintings, territorial insignia, ritualistic or ceremonial decor, et cetera! We’re not putting any definition or restriction to the kind of creative input we’d like to receive. We’re looking to include as many interesting items in the game as possible (and of course give credit where its due!). If you’re unsure, email us now with your idea! We’ll get in touch and take it from there!

 

Historical & Anthropological Facts: Like Roberto Digiglio, our studio’s Lead Artist said: “We’re just game developers.” We’re not trying to reproduce the story of civilization with 100% accuracy at all. We’re just trying to create a fun game in a setting not so well explored in the industry. While the gameplay of Voodoo is set in a fantasy primal Africa, we still want to capture interesting facts about real African history. Actually, we’re introducing a feature that we’ve codenamed “Mirror Stones”. These will be hidden collectibles scattered around the map that contain historical facts. The more of these stones a player collects, the smarter his/her tribe will become… More on that later! If you have any troves of knowledge that we can include in bite-sizes through our “Mirror Stones” then send in a submission now!

 

Technology & Entrepreneurship: Are you an African-based startup that’s created something really interesting? Simply send us your bio and we will include it in another collectible in our game that we’ve currently codenamed “Tech Stones”. Not only will players be able to learn about real African-based innovations through Voodoo, but tribes with more tech knowledge will have an advantage… The plot thickens, doesn’t it?!

 

Spoken Word: Any interesting literature on Africa that you’ve created? Prose? Poetry? Something inspiring? We’d like to link our (you guessed it) codenamed “Star Stones” to interesting pieces of written works that you’ve created or curated.

 

 

By now you’ve figured that this is actually more than a call-for-submissions. We’ve just unveiled a new element of gameplay here: the stones. But our devblog will have fuller explanation of these soon!

 

We’ll continue to update this brief with further details and instructions as we get feedback from you and start forming some standards.

Voodoo – Gameplay Trailer Gamescom 2016


Voodoo is a survival game set in a fantasy primitive africa where you will be one of the founders of civilization.
Build your village with your friends or other people you will meet in the game, and start fighting against other players’ villages.
And for the first time, we are showing some gameplay footage of the Izimu fight. Izimus are ancients gods that you and your friends will have to defeat to gain poweful loot for you and technologies for your village.
But beware, every Izimu will have a different way to kill it, so you have to study your enemy and be prepared. Will you manage to be the strongest to start leading your civilization? or will you fall, defeated by your many enemies? The decision is up to you.
